International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has announced the completion of Phase 1 of the Helskie Quay upgrade at its Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) in Gdynia, Poland. This project, carried out in coordination with the Port of Gdynia Authority, is part of a two-phase initiative aimed at enhancing the terminal's capacity to accommodate larger vessels.
Phase 1 of the upgrade focused on a 400-meter section of the quay, now equipped with a depth of 15.5 meters. Improvements included the installation of a third rail for wider span cranes, new hydrotechnical structures, upgraded roads, and enhanced utility networks. This phase, completed on schedule at a cost of USD 42 million, provides a foundation for increased operational efficiency at the port. With Phase 2 scheduled for completion by the end of Q2 2026, an additional 100 meters of quay will be upgraded, alongside the expansion of a turning basin, enabling the port to accommodate vessels up to 400 meters in length with a 14.7-meter draft.
Looking ahead, Phase 2 will involve further reconstruction of quay sections, installation of new crane tracks, and modernization of heavy-duty surfaces. The installation of new super-post-Panamax quay cranes will increase BCT's annual berth handling capacity to between 1.2 million and 1.6 million TEUs. The total investment for both phases is expected to exceed USD 84 million. BCT will also adopt the Navis N4 4 Terminal Operating System in October, introducing an appointment system for truck drivers and optimizing container handling through advanced technologies like Prime Route and Expert Docking.
