The arrival of summer is boosting the consumption of Ivorian coconuts on the European market. "In the Netherlands in particular, demand for Ivorian coconuts is sensitive to the warmer weather," according to Nestor Beugre, an Ivorian exporter.
Beugre says, "There are two times of year when demand for coconuts from Côte d'Ivoire is boosted: at the end of the year, and in summer. The festive season is a busy time, when coconuts are used as a gastronomic ingredient, especially in the preparation of pastries. The end of last year was no exception. Now we're gearing up for the summer period, when coconuts are appreciated by consumers and eaten fresh or processed."
The two periods are distinct in terms of the destinations for Ivorian coconuts, according to the exporter. "In my case, at least, I can see that demand in the end-of-year period comes mainly from Russia, and concerns medium sizes. As for the summer window, it mainly comes from the Netherlands, where consumers have a preference for large calibers," he adds.
"Coconuts of Ivorian origin are undoubtedly appreciated in the Dutch market, due to the geographical proximity which guarantees the freshness of the coconuts, especially when they are delivered just after harvest. Last year I exported up to 50 trucks and hope to continue increasing my volume. We offer a wide choice of organic and hybrid coconuts in different calibers, to suit our customers' requirements," Beugre continues.
Ivorian exporters also have a major advantage, according to the exporter: "Our prices are competitive. This year, we were able to lower our prices by 5% compared to last year to be able to sell our fruit faster."
"We want to make more volumes in the Netherlands and the Nordic countries, where coconuts have acquired a consumer base that appreciates this fruit. The summer commercial window still has great untapped potential," the exporter concludes.
