Bangladesh completes garlic harvest; Natore leading production

In Bangladesh, garlic harvesting has concluded, and growers are now engaged in processing and storage operations. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), garlic cultivation spanned 77,900 hectares across 64 districts within 14 agricultural regions, yielding a total output of 690,900 tons this season.

Natore district leads with garlic cultivation on 22,855 hectares, representing 30% of the nation's total cultivated area. The district produced 215,000 tons of garlic this season. The DAE noted a gradual increase in both cultivation area and production in Natore over recent years, with 16,745 hectares yielding 148,257 tons in 2023, and 18,005 hectares producing 158,201 tons in 2024. This season, the district exceeded its Rabi season target of 18,200 hectares, reaching 22,855 hectares.

Garlic production in Natore is concentrated in Gurudaspur and Baraigram upazilas. Baraigram accounts for the largest share with 8,993 hectares, followed by Gurudaspur with 7,375 hectares, Natore Sadar with 2,880 hectares, Lalpur with 1,100 hectares, Bagatipara with 1,076 hectares, Singra with 105 hectares, and Naldanga with 426 hectares.

Tofazzal Hossain, a garlic farmer from Tirail village in Baraigram upazila, has completed his harvest on one bigha of land this season.
