Potato processing restarts in Ukraine with new equipment

Reno LLC, a potato processing company based on the outskirts of Kyiv, Ukraine, has resumed operations after a period of significant disruption. The company's facility was severely damaged, requiring a complete rebuild to restart production. With support from the DHI subsidy provided by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, Reno LLC acquired a new processing line, including a demonstration model of a peeling line with water transport.

Following the damage, the company faced the challenge of sourcing entirely new machinery to restore its processing capabilities. Owner Sergey Zavgorodniuk connected with Dutch equipment manufacturer Marcelissen to find a suitable solution. Marcelissen provided a new setup, including a peeling line capable of processing up to 3,000 kilograms of potatoes per hour—an increase over the company's previous capacity.

Alongside the main peeling line, several other machines were installed to support operations. These included a drum knife peeler for peeling and re-peeling, a transport auger for controlled movement of root vegetables, and an auger destoner to remove sand and stones from the production flow. A wet hopper with an outfeed conveyor belt was added for receiving and buffering products, while an inspection belt allowed for sorting and quality checks. An electronic weighing machine, equipped with a touchscreen interface, was installed to manage portion control automatically.

Installation required detailed preparation and was completed under the supervision of technical staff. Maintenance for the new equipment is supported remotely, allowing engineers based in the Netherlands to monitor machine performance and guide the Reno LLC team as needed. This approach reduces the need for onsite visits while enabling local staff to manage routine maintenance independently.

The new processing line allows Reno LLC to operate at full capacity once again. Ukraine is the largest potato producer in Europe, and the new setup aligns with the country's agricultural strengths. While the company has long-term ambitions to explore export markets, its current focus remains on rebuilding and strengthening its presence in the domestic market.

The facility also functions as a demonstration site for other processors in the region. Local companies visit the plant to observe the system and assess potential upgrades for their own operations. In this way, the plant contributes not only to Reno LLC's recovery but also to broader development within Ukraine's potato industry.
