Rio Grande do Norte, a key player in melon production and exportation in Brazil, is exploring avenues to enhance its shipments to China. The potential market expansion could see Brazilian exports triple within three years. Despite China being the largest global producer of melons, its production wanes from October to April. This timeframe aligns with the harvesting and exporting period in Rio Grande do Norte, presenting an opportunity for Brazil.
Challenges to entering the Chinese market include logistical complexities such as loading infrastructure, transit duration, and maintaining product quality during transit. Sea freight currently averages 30 days, which matches the melon's shelf life. Additionally, the fruits must meet phytosanitary standards and obtain necessary export certifications.
To support market entry, a Brazilian agribusiness delegation is scheduled to visit Shanghai in May 2025. Furthermore, Chinese trade representatives are anticipated to attend the International Irrigated Tropical Fruit Fair (Expofruit) in MossorĂ³ from August 20 to 22 this year.
