Bauke Derks, MK Food:

"Quickly bridging supply gaps in Scandinavia when Spanish shipments fall short"

The fresh produce sector has always been close to Bauke Derks, despite his long-standing focus on supplying bakery products to the retail market. Now, together with his youngest son Koen, he is shifting back toward fruit and vegetable trading through their company, MK Food, based in Coevorden. The duo was also present at Fruit Logistica in Berlin in early February. "We are gradually expanding our exports, mainly to Norway and Sweden, where we have built a solid customer base," says Bauke.

All greenhouse vegetables are part of the agency exporter's product range. "Tomatoes in all shapes and varieties, cucumbers, courgettes, and aubergines, but also onions, fruits, and even exotic produce are among the options. We aim to offer a complete package, with the key requirement being high-quality products with a long shelf life. In recent years, consumers have become increasingly demanding in this regard." At MK Food, operations are kept efficient: loading takes place directly at the grower's premises, with products shipped straight from the greenhouse before the truck begins its journey northward. "Cherry tomatoes have always been my specialty."

"The strength of our small company lies precisely in our agility and flexibility—qualities that larger companies often lack when it comes to responding quickly, precisely, and efficiently to customer demands, or even supplier needs. In the far north, many buyers have established direct relationships with growers and suppliers in Spain in recent years. However, when gaps in supply occur—which happens every year due to weather conditions or other factors—we in the Netherlands are ready to step in and ensure a smooth supply," Bauke explains.

Bauke and Koen take pride in being available 24/7, including weekends. "If someone calls us on a Saturday or Sunday needing to arrange a load, we are happy to help if it's within our capability. With the network I have built over the years, there's a good chance we can provide a positive solution," Bauke concludes.
