New Zealand's East Coast apple harvest begins, early shipments head to Asia

Early-season apple harvesting has commenced on the North Island's East Coast, signaling the onset of the apple export period. Mr Apple, a major grower under Scales Corporation, cultivates apples in Hawke's Bay for export to about 40 international markets.

Sales and marketing manager Ben McLeod noted, "It's just starting to kick off," as the harvest begins. Early varieties, including their proprietary Posy, are being picked and packed. "Ships have already been loaded as of last week, and that's all destined for the Asian markets," he stated.

At Mr Apple's Meeanee Orchard near Napier, apples are being processed for export. Napier Port's Facebook update confirmed receipt and export of apples, with a vessel departing for China carrying five containers of Mr Apple apples. "While it's still early in the season, this timing is right on track with previous years, as early harvest varieties start making their way through the supply chain," it stated.

McLeod reported favorable growing conditions, with a warm, dry November accelerating the season, followed by a cooler December and early January. "We're not as early as everyone thought we were going to be," he mentioned, but noted the fruit quality is exceptional. "What we're seeing is probably some of the best fruits since 2018," he remarked.

McLeod highlighted the contribution of Pacific Island pickers under the Recognised Employer Scheme. The acquisition of Bostock Group orchards, including the Dazzle variety, indicates a busy year ahead.

Scales Corporation reported a net profit after tax of $38.1 million for the six months to June 2024, an increase from $14.3 million in 2023, attributing it to horticulture recovery, strong protein performance, and higher production levels.
