"AUSVEG continues to monitor the impact on Australian export demand into Europe flowing from the New Zealand-EU Free Trade Agreement"

Onions are a key crop in the Australian vegetable industry. As one of the country's top five
vegetable commodities by both production volume and value, onions are grown across the
year in different states. The bulk of Onion production is in Tasmania and South Australia,
while parts of Queensland and Western Australia are also significant growing regions.

Global trade - Australia
In 2024 for the year up to November, onion exports were valued at nearly AUD$41 million
with just over 42,000 tonnes exported, which is comparable to the previous year. Thailand
remains the top export destination with nearly 10,000 tonnes shipped, with the United Arab
Emirates, The Netherlands, Malaysia, and Japan make up the top five export markets. With
40 countries in total purchasing Australian onions over this period, AUSVEG expects export
will be an important part of the 2025 season, as it has been in other years.

"High production costs have remained a major challenge for vegetable growers across the
industry, and for exporting onion growers freight represents a major expense," said a representative from the organization.

"AUSVEG continues to monitor the impact on Australian export demand into Europe flowing
from the New Zealand-EU Free Trade Agreement and continues to support the Australian
Government's trade liberalization agenda to improve market access conditions for Australian
onions, and other vegetable commodities."

Seasonal conditions – Australia
"Given the widespread onion growing area across Australia, the nation is fortunate to enjoy
relatively consistent onion production, despite some localized weather challenges. Recently,
this has included parts of Queensland, where late season onions were dealt a wet weather
blow, while parts of South Australia have experienced extremely dry growing conditions."
