Guatemala explores new potato varieties to boost Belize's farming industry

A team from the Ministry of Agriculture is exploring new potato varieties in Guatemala intending to transform the country's farming industry. Under the leadership of Minister JosĂ© Abelardo Mai, the delegation is visiting potato farms in PoptĂșn, Guatemala, to identify new potato varieties suitable for processing markets. The ministry's initiative seeks to add value to perishable crops, focusing on creating long-term solutions for farmers.

During their two-day visit, the delegation is addressing challenges faced by Belize's potato and carrot farmers, including market access and oversupply issues. The potential introduction of Guatemala's white potatoes, processed into popular products by companies such as Frito-Lay, presents an opportunity. Given Belize's similar climate and altitude, these varieties could perform well locally, providing a new revenue source for farmers.

The ministry's strategy to enhance the value of perishable crops aims to convert existing challenges into profitable opportunities, potentially reducing losses for farmers and improving their financial outlook. The delegation plans to conclude their visit on January 24, after engaging with experts and observing successful farming practices firsthand.
