Lower supply ahead on cauliflower

The supply of cauliflower is likely to tighten up in the near future. "The supply is good right now, but the cold weather we're seeing nationwide is also impacting the desert-growing regions," says Scott Niizawa of Church Brothers Farms. "This will lead to lighter supplies in the next couple of weeks if not sooner. We're always at the mercy of Mother Nature, and given cauliflower's sensitivity to growing conditions, quality can be a challenge."

Cauliflower supply is coming from the Imperial Valley at the moment where production is anticipated to stay until mid-April.

As for supply, how does this look compared to last year at this time? "This time last year, we were seeing drenching rains as well as extreme cold. Minus the wet weather, we have some of the same challenges this year with morning ice. This leads to discoloration and lighter case weights," says Niizawa.

Cold weather impacting demand
As for the demand for the vegetable, it is currently lower, even though cauliflower lends itself to cold-weather winter comfort meals such as soups, roasted sheet pan meals, and more. Though as the weather stabilizes across the country, demand is expected to pick up again. In the meantime, following the fires in the Los Angeles, California region, which haven't affected the company's growing regions, the company has been sending quite a bit of product to food banks in the LA area to help with relief efforts.

On pricing, compared to a few weeks ago, prices have recently gone up. Though with the bad weather across the country, demand supporting those prices has softened.
