Potato prices in Kazakhstan have surged in recent weeks, prompting the Ministry of Trade and Integration to investigate intermediaries involved in the price hikes. The ministry revealed that 20 regional commissions had been held since the start of the year, uncovering 49 violations where traders exceeded the allowed 15% markup on potatoes. Administrative measures are being taken against the offenders.
Despite these price hikes, efforts to stabilize the market are showing results. In Astana, the price of potatoes in retail chains has dropped to between 185 and 280 tenge per kilogram (€0.38 to €0.58). Nationwide, the average price has reached 322 tenge (€0.66). The government has assured that there is enough stock of potatoes available in social stores, where prices remain below market rates.
Regional price fluctuations have been notable. In Aktobe, the price per kilogram was below 200 tenge in early January (€0.41), but it doubled within a week, with many potatoes damaged. In regions like Zhetysu, known for potato farming, prices have exceeded 400 tenge (€0.82), but the quality is better compared to other areas. In Pavlodar, the price of local potatoes has reached 400 tenge in markets, while in Kyzylorda, potatoes from Pavlodar are sold for 360 tenge (€0.74).
Despite the increased demand, Kazakhstan's potato production in 2024 reached 2.9 million tons, exceeding the country's annual need of 2 million tons.
