Wandin Valley farms blends tradition and technology in cherry cultivation

Wandin Valley Farms, nestled in Victoria's Yarra Valley, has been in cherry cultivation for over 130 years. Established in 1893, this family-operated farm has successfully merged traditional practices with modern ones to cultivate cherries. Graeme Sebire, the family patriarch, reflects on the farm's long history with cherries, dating back to when his grandfather began a nursery for fruit tree propagation. The involvement of Woolworths has been acknowledged as a positive development for the farm.

The farm is now managed by the fifth generation of the family, with Graeme's grandchildren, Paris and Reuben, playing key roles. Paris oversees the farm's operations, highlighting the critical timing of cherry harvests to ensure optimal sugar levels and color. The farm utilizes technology, including trunk sensors for precise irrigation.

Reuben, who oversees production, details the farm's packing technology. Utilizing artificial intelligence, cherries are sorted by color, size, and defects, ensuring that only the highest quality fruit reaches the market. This meticulous process is complemented by rapid cooling techniques to maintain freshness.

The farm's dedication is supported by a partnership with Woolworths, spanning over a decade. This collaboration has been instrumental in delivering cherries to consumers, aligning with the farm's commitment. Wandin Valley Farms exemplifies the harmonious blend of family tradition and technological advancement in producing cherries for Australian families.
