Ethiopia progresses in fruit cultivation through the Green Legacy Initiative

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has highlighted the outcomes of the Green Legacy Initiative in Ethiopia, focusing on fruit cultivation. Launched in 2019, this initiative aims at restoring degraded lands, boosting forest cover, and mitigating climate change effects. With over 32.5 billion tree saplings planted across the nation, the initiative is on track to reach its goal of 50 billion by 2026. It not only focuses on afforestation but also promotes the cultivation of high-value fruits like avocados, mangoes, apples, and papayas for both the domestic and international markets.

Abiy Ahmed, in his recent social media posts, emphasized the successful results from the fruit cultivation phase of the initiative, urging the enhancement of practices and the adoption of innovative techniques to further environmental and agricultural goals. The initiative, aligning with the 2030 Agenda, also aims at contributing to food security. Ethiopia has set an ambitious target to plant 7.5 billion tree seedlings this rainy season, aiming for a total of 40 billion seedlings planted by the year's end.
