In December, onion prices noticeably dropped, with producers selling their products for 0.24 to 0.36 euros/kg at the beginning of the month. This marked an average decrease of around 16% compared to previous months. Additionally, the cost of vegetables has halved since December 2022.
However, in supermarkets, prices are still rising, reaching an average of 0.4 euros/kg. Despite this, considering the current trend, it is anticipated that prices may soon start to decrease.
Tetyana Popovych, the marketing department head of the wholesale agricultural product market "Shuvar," provided insights into the situation.
Price fluctuation is attributed to factors such as quality and sales volume. Popovych explained that the decline in onion prices is influenced by seasonal changes and quality issues, with a significant portion of onions on the market unsuitable for long-term storage.
The experts predict that prices may continue to fall as lower-quality products are actively sold.
External factors, including Ukraine's role as a major onion importer due to Russia's disruption of key production zones, adverse weather conditions in Western Europe, floods in Pakistan, and frost in Central Asia, have also significantly impacted onion supplies. Export restrictions from Central Asian countries and Turkey have further complicated the market. While onion prices in supermarkets are rising, selling at an average of 0.4 euros/kg, the overall range in retail is between 0.3 and 0.5 euros/kg.
