Asta Frutta Alto Adige, summary by coordinator Markus Tscholl

Rising prices at the apple auction in Italy

Markus Tscholl, who coordinates Asta Frutta Alto Adige, is delighted that the average selling price is higher than in 2022, thanks in part to better quality and larger sizes. The only downside is the two heavy hailstorms that hit Vilpiano (Bolzano) and the surrounding areas in the summer, which damaged a large part of the apple orchards.

"Had it not been for the hailstorms," says the manager, "we would have had a record year to remember for years. In any case, the prices for the first pick have been very good, and the bidders are very happy.”

About 45 percent of the auctioned hectares have no net protection. However, it is important to note that almost all producers are insured and will receive what they are owed to supplement their income.

"Among other things," says Tscholl, "the industry is generating very good prices, so that even the apples that have been hailed have managed to achieve a minimum level of profitability.”

The apple harvest is almost over. There are still batches of Pink Lady, Crimson Snow and Joia. "The Italian market has responded very well this year," he points out, "but we are also very pleased with the relations we have established with Spain. Spanish operators have bought large quantities of Golden Caliber 75+ packed in 50x30 wooden boxes."

In addition to Spain, overseas sales have been very good in Germany and other countries in Central Europe (with large quantities also being shipped to the Netherlands and Belgium).

"Before the campaign, I had hoped for an even better season," Tscholl concluded, "but after the two severe hailstorms in July and August, we are satisfied with the results.”
