The cost of watermelons has skyrocketed in Australia. Coles and Woolworths are selling whole watermelons for $36 and $34.32 respectively, pointing to weather patterns in the Northern Territory as the fruit moves into a new season.
One consumer said: “We’re spending hundreds (of dollars) a week on groceries, even when you go just for a quick top up its at least $80, let alone for our weekly shop. I like to think I’m a savvy shopper, but even if you think you’re getting it on sale, the sale price is probably what it should be all the time.”
She added that she was being more selective about what she put in the shopping basket and was foregoing expendable items like cheese and wines. “Some weeks you buy the necessities for the kids but maybe not so much for my husband and I, because you’ve got put the kids first.”
