Ukrainian farmers have averted a vegetable crisis in Ukraine by expanding the agricultural land dedicated to vegetable cultivation. Yuriy Kormyshkin, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of LLC SP "PAEK," is confident that the overall volume of vegetables grown, particularly those essential to Ukrainian cuisine, now meets the domestic market's demands, thereby stabilizing retail prices for consumers.
"We continue to harvest onions despite the skeptics who predicted a vegetable crisis in Ukraine. Looking at our fellow agrarians engaged in vegetable farming, I can confidently say that we have managed to grow vegetables in these challenging times, and there will be no vegetable crisis in our country," stated Yuriy Kormyshkin.
It is worth noting that the 2022 season, executed by Ukrainian agrarians under extremely challenging conditions, did not yield the desired results for the domestic market. Several factors contributed to this situation, including ongoing shelling, fertilizer shortages, high its prices, rising fuel costs, and its scarcity. The destruction of machinery due to shelling and the occupation of significant territories, which once contributed a substantial percentage of main vegetables to the domestic market, also played a role.
In the 2023 season, despite potential losses in vegetable cultivation and considering additional risks related to fertilizers, some Ukrainian agrarians expanded the acreage dedicated to vegetable farming. For instance, the company "PAEK" allocated approximately 300 hectares of land for drip irrigation vegetable cultivation in 2023. While previously vegetables were primarily grown for the company and its employees, in recent and current seasons, LLC SP "PAEK" has contributed to stabilizing the domestic market by cultivating vegetables for sale.
