Banana producers in Guadeloupe are hoping for a helping hand from the state. Professionals from the sector are to discuss the increase in the cost of production, inputs but also salaries and expenses to move towards agriculture that is more respectful of nature. Banana producers in Guadeloupe and Martinique have benefited from European aid of €129 million per year since 2007 as part of POSEI (Program of options specific to remoteness and insularity). But it would no longer be enough to cover their costs.
Furthermore, the Guadeloupe Banana Planters Group denounces the fact that “export bananas, which represent around 95% of volumes in the French West Indies, have just been deprived of any aid, from the €10 million euros fund announced by Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, in support of overseas fruit producers and vegetables, in order to offset the effects of inflation.
