Argentina can re-enter EU market with organic citrus after 20 years

After a 20-year hiatus, organic citrus from Argentina will be allowed to re-enter the European Union, the National Agency for Agro-Food Hygiene and Quality Service announced this week. Under a market access agreement, the European Union has agreed to allow the use of sodium bicarbonate as a post-harvest treatment for organic citrus exports.

Argentina currently has 8,258 hectares of organic citrus suitable for export to the EU. When Argentina gained market access between 2001 and 2003, it exported 2,500 tons of organic citrus fruit, mainly oranges and lemons, to the EU.
