“Current market is looking for smaller sized cherries”

The Turkish cherry season is very close to starting. Kubra Guven, marketing manager of Ana Fruit, states they’re expecting a larger harvest than they had last year. “This year, the weather conditions in Turkey have been great and we are expecting good yield for our cherries. Compared to the previous year, our volumes look much better, which will result in an increase of our strength in the market, putting Turkey ahead of the competition. We expect to start the cherry season around 25th of May and the current demand from both existing and potential new markets looks very promising.”

Thanks to new varieties, the position of Turkey in the global cherry market is improving even further, Guven explains. “We plant new fertile varieties in our own orchard and also we buy directly from the farmers all around Turkey. We then sell them directly to the end customer, which gives us the strength to compete in the market. In addition to that, the decades of experience and a great market network enables us to provide the best quality cherries with competitive prices.”

This year, smaller sized cherries are in strong demand, a trend that has been going on for the past few years, Guven states: “If we’re looking at the demand and prices, it seems the current market is looking for smaller cherries more than the larger ones. The demand for small sized cherries was always there, but in the past couple of years we have observed an increasing trend for this demand. We’re expecting a great season as the yield is good and the pricing will be competitive correspondingly. We believe that Turkey's position in the global market will be fine and we’ll be able to increase the export volumes this year.”
