What's new on the basil front

L'Ortolano produces various basil varieties suitable for all kinds of needs. "For us, basil is a leading product in which we have invested and continue to invest a lot. Our varieties are different and suitable for all kinds of contexts and cultivation types. We are available to provide the best advice for each case," explains technician Gaetano Biavati. Below is a list of the main varieties available.   

Zeus: "genovese" type with medium-compact plants. Suitable for cultivation in pots. Short internodes and medium-fast growth. Medium-bright colored leaves with a classic "genovese" shape. Seeds are tested for Cuscuta and the main pathogens. Resistances, [IR]: PB Peronospora Belbahrii.

 

Sprinter: "genovese" type with medium-compact plants. Suitable for cultivation in pots, cutting, floating systems, and the processing industry. Also suitable for cultivation during periods of low light. Rapid growth with medium-short internodes. Smooth leaves of a bright light green color, large size, and classic "genovese" shape. Seeds are tested for Cuscuta and other pathogens and bacteria.

Luxor is a compact "genovese" plant. Positioning: pots and floating systems. Also suitable for cultivation during periods of low light. Short internodes and medium-rapid growth, bright green leaves of a medium shape with the classic "genovese" shape, yet a bit longer. Seeds: tested for Cuscuta and other pathogens and bacteria.  

Robur: "genovese" type with broad leaves, suitable for cultivation in greenhouses and open fields. Vigorous plant with medium-long internodes. Large leaves, smooth and heavy with a medium-bright color. Fast re-growth and absence of "minty aroma." Seeds are tested for Cuscuta and the main pathogens.

Robur

Mammolo is a typical "genovese" basil with compact plants. Suitable for cultivation in pots and appreciated by the processing industry for cultivation in open fields for single harvests. Short internodes with broad, smooth leaves, intense aroma with a high content of essential oils, and free from methyl chavicol (i.e., minty aroma). Seeds tested for Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. basilicum, Peronospora sp., Rhizoctonia solani, Colletotrichum geosporioides, Erwina spp., Pseudomonas spp., cuscuta.

Mammolo and Aromatico della Riviera Ligure Certificato

Aromatico della Riviera Ligure Certificato (genovese). Giant "genovese" basil is suitable for greenhouses and open fields but also adapts to pots. Long internodes with oval leaves with a typical "spoon" shape. Bright green color and free from methyl chavicol. Seeds are tested for Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.basilicumPeronospora spRhizoctonia solaniColletotrichum geosporioidesErwina sppPseudomonas spp, cuscuta.

Research continues at L'Ortolano on varieties with updated resistances, a better aroma, and suitable for new types of cultivation, such as floating systems.
