Senegalese mango producers are preparing for the launch of the export campaign in June, with an expected increase in volumes, says Mohamed Mbengue of Unionagri Des Niayes.
According to the producer, the campaign has all the ingredients for success: "The climatic conditions have been very good, with usual temperature levels, enough sunlight hours, and good rainfall. This was reflected in the coloring, which reached 70% of red, and in the sizes ranging from 7 to 12. This also bodes well for a wonderful taste".
Good weather conditions and strong demand have encouraged producers to increase their acreage, adds Mohamed: "We went from a volume of 1,000 tons last year to 1,700-1,800 tons expected this year. All producers have increased their acreage since the Senegalese Kent mango has gained a great reputation in the world."
"Due to their aesthetic aspect and size, most of the production is suitable for supermarkets. We also have calibers of an equally good taste destined for the processed mango and juice industries", add Mohamed.
In terms of prices, the producer does not expect any change: "We will keep prices at the same level as last season. However, our payment terms will be tighter. We were hurt last year by unpaid deliveries even though we respected the delivery conditions and the quality reports on delivery were good. We will require more secure payment conditions."
The producer delivers especially in the European markets: "We deliver to Holland, Spain, Germany, United Kingdom, and France, and a lesser extent to North Africa and the Middle East. We are looking to increase our volumes delivered in Europe, as we have all the necessary certifications and offer very competitive prices for superior quality, comparable to mangoes from Brazil or Peru."
