The Peruvian mango supply is just about peaking. Nevertheless, according to Marcel van Rooijen of Trofi in the Netherlands, the market has regained a nice balance. "The market was dramatic in December, but the situation, fortunately, turned around in late January. Prices are back to a regular level which makes imports far more interesting. Supermarket demand is good, and there are no large stocks in the way," he says.
"The supply from Peru will remain at its peak for another week and then slowly decline. Quality-wise, too, the season is going extremely well. There's an occasional mango that's a bit riper, but that's normal for the time of year. The supply from the Piura area is now ending, so we're switching to Casma. Considerably fewer mangoes are coming from there; thus, high prices are demanded."
"That's why we're sourcing Brazilian mangoes too. However, since November, sea freight prices from Peru have been significantly lower than Brazil's. That complicates things a bit because spending $2,500 more for your freight from Brazil is quite a big deal," Marcel concludes.
