Citrus fruit - high prices and lower purchasing power

“We commercialize various types of citrus fruits to cover a wide commercial calendar. Our fruits are obtained from approximately thirty hectares, fifteen of which owned by us. The total production is around 500 ton and includes the Tarocco Ippolito and Tarocco Lempso varieties," reports Luca Scaccianoce, owner of a cooperative managed by the entire family.

"These varieties are very prestigious and, although other countries such as Spain, South Africa and Morocco try to grow them, they do not manage to achieve the same results. Our fruits are the result of the soil and weather conditions at the foothills of Mount Etna."

Although founded in 1990, Soc. Coop. Scaccianoce boasts over 60 years of experience in the production and distribution of citrus fruit from Palagonia (CT), a small town in Sicily famous precisely for citrus fruit production. As the generations changed, it introduced both early and late varieties resistant to climate change.

Lately, the company also specialized in online sales. It is possible to purchase blood oranges, Tarocco Gallo, Naveline and Moro oranges, clementines, lemons, late tangerines from Ciaculli as well as many other Sicilian products (sweets, marmalades and savory preserves).

"The current campaign is characterized by lower volumes and larger grades due to the 50% drop in production from Palagonia. We are a dynamic and growing company and pay particular attention to new trends and market requests. We have planted new orchards with innovative Tarocco varieties and highly-pigmented clones including Tarocco Ippolito, Tarocco rosso CVR and Tarocco Lempso."

"In general, this could be a good citrus fruit campaign were it not for the prices. Quotations are high due to the increases all over Italy, however families have less purchasing power. This is affecting online sales too, as people are ordering less."

"Our clients are mainly single or multiple families aggregated in purchasing groups, or even colleagues from large companies that have the produce delivered directly at work."
