Potato consumption in French households increases by 1.5%

French potato sales had a very positive end to the year in 2022. According to the latest Kantar report, in the period between November 28 and December 25, 2022, French household potato purchases increased by 6.4% compared to December 2021, and by 3% compared to 2019, the year before Covid.

The latest bulletin of the French potato interprofessional details, that compared to the year 2019, purchases in supermarkets increased by 5.7% and fell by 8.2% in specialized channels. In e-commerce, which accounted for 7% of the total during this period, the volume of purchases increased by 38%. Convenience stores sold 5.2% more; on the other hand, purchases decreased in hypermarkets by 1.8% and in supermarkets by 2.7%.

In terms of formats purchased, in supermarkets, 1 to 2 kg formats continue to perform well, with an 85% increase in volume compared to the previous year. Sales of 5kg formats increased by 47%, mainly because the number of references of this type doubled.

The average price of the potatoes purchased increased by 9.8% over the same period of 2019, standing at 1.24 euro/kg on average in supermarkets.

Cumulatively, since the start of the 2022-23 season, i.e. during the period from August 8, 2022, to December 25, 2022, the quantities purchased by households in large distribution increased by 1.5% over the same period of 2019.
