Grenoble walnut PDO at Fruit Logistica for the first time

From the 8th to the 10th of February, the Grenoble walnut PDO will be present for the first time at Fruit Logistica, the largest international fair for fruit and vegetables.

The 3 varieties of Grenoble walnut PDO (Franquette, Mayette and Parisienne) will be presented to the thousands of visitors of Fruit Logistica. Last year, the event gathered 40,000 professional visitors and buyers from 130 countries, with more than 2,000 exhibitors from 87 countries. With 13,000 tons produced each year, the Grenoble walnut PDO has been part of the French gastronomic heritage for at least a thousand years. It was actually the first French fruit to be granted a protected designation in 1938. Recognized for its unique flavor and nutritional benefits, it is now known by 1 out of 2 French people and it is the PDO most widely consumed by nut lovers in France: it is found in the shopping baskets of 35% of consumers of this nut.

It is also very popular on the international market, which loves the uniqueness of this fruit sold exclusively in its shell (more than half of the production is exported, mainly to the European Union): 18% to Italy, 18% to Germany, 9% to Switzerland and 8% to other countries*. 

It is in this context that the Grenoble walnut PDO will be represented at Fruit Logistica, with a dynamic concept (tasting, breaking) in the hall dedicated to France (hall 22, B33) next to the Coopenoix cooperative, which will allow it to anchor its export presence. “This participation will help us get closer to our clients and give more visibility to the Grenoble walnut, which was only represented by marketers until now. This year, the Designation will be represented. The French market is stable, so the export markets serve as an adjustment variable. It is therefore necessary to anchor our presence outside of France,” explains Nathalie Gaillard, coordinator of the Interprofessional Committee of the Grenoble walnut (CING). It will also be an opportunity to highlight this year’s particularly qualitative harvest.
