Belgian company Kimco is introducing shallots in the Dutch and Belgian markets. It is packaged in a tray developed by Smart Packaging Solutions. "We process about 20,000 tons of onions and 55,000 tons of carrots annually," says Kimco owner Marc De Kimpe. "In 2022, we added shallots to our assortment. They're a nice expansion to our onion range."
Well-packaged, highly visible shallots
Kimco processes these shallots and packages them in 250 or 500g net bags, depending on what customers want. These bags are then packed in a tray for distribution. Smart Packaging Solutions, also a Belgian company, developed this packaging at Kimco's request. "We specifically chose open packaging. The trays are placed in stores, where shoppers must be able to see the product. This tray allows that."
Easy handling
The packaging offers more advantages, adds Marc. "The bags are automatically filled, weighed, and closed and are then placed, by hand, in the box. Its construction aids quick packing. These boxes are also easy to stack, making for easy handling. Open packing has good airflow too. With shallots, that's important; it keeps the packed product in good condition," he explains.
New product in custom-made packaging
"A good first impression wins half the battle." For an attractive appearance and presentation, Kimco had a design custom-made for the packaging. Smart Packaging Solutions provides the printing and sends the die-cut packaging to J&S Packaging, which then sets up the boxes and delivers them to Kimco.
Moisture-resistant solid cardboard
Johan De Neef, Managing Director of Smart Packaging Solutions: "Boxes of shallots are often stored, refrigerated, and distributed with other vegetables. Those include moister products like carrots and lettuce. Then you need a moisture-resistant box. Solid cardboard is, and it retains its strength, so the packaging remains in good condition."

"Smart Packaging Solutions had the expertise and know-how to find a solution for us," continues Marc. When developing new packaging, we've worked with VPK Group (Smart Packaging Solutions' parent company) before. For example, a few years ago, VPK Group developed a corrugated cardboard onion pallet box for us."
"Our companies know each other very well. We're barely three kilometers from each other, and there are many similarities. VPK Group's history goes back to 1936, around the same time my grandparents started our company. We're both family businesses that have been around for four generations," he concludes.
