ICL introduces FruitMag

New natural post-harvest citrus protection firming agent replaces chemicals

It is time to replace the harmful chemical residues in citrus fruit and extend its shelf life with ICL's new product FruitMagTM  that is an ecological, sustainable, natural and healthy firming agent. A majority of today's citrus fruits are treated with chemical fungicides that prolong shelf life by depositing residues in the fruit. The new product developed by ICL is paving the way for a better future.

Post-harvest industry is faced with the need to extend citrus fruit shelf life by reducing losses. To meet this need, citrus fruit are treated with fungicides. However, this method poses a major problem: the fungicides' allowed maximum residue levels (MRL) are constantly being reduced by food regulation organizations.

Aligning with today's global food trends, ICL's product portfolio combines innovation with sustainable impact. ICL has recently developed FruitMag – a natural mineral-based firming agent that specifically addresses citrus fruit industry needs. FruitMag reduces the loss of citrus fruit throughout post-harvest treatment without the use of fungicides.

Why is FruitMag different?
FruitMag isn't an ordinary firming agent. FruitMag is a non-residual and safe treatment solution that covers all citrus varieties. It is a novel alternative to chemical-based materials, the product is an original patented.

FruitMag is based on natural high purity magnesium sourced from the Dead Sea. Responding to a growing demand from pack houses for zero residue solutions, FruitMag is a high efficacy, food grade Generally recognized as safe (GRAS) product.

The Effectiveness of FruitMag
ICL and the Volcani Institute teamed up to conduct an efficacy study on a large variety of citrus fruit. Repeated testing on oranges, grapefruits, lemons and other citrus fruit demonstrated superior or equal efficacy levels compared to the standard chemical fungicides treatments. FruitMag is easy to apply via spraying, drenching, dipping and more, can be applied at room temperature, and is suitable for all pack house types.

Convenient business with ICL
Retailers and post-harvest companies should make a choice: continue with traditional methods or embrace innovative trends. Taking the first step is easy: ICL's expert team of chemists, engineers and scientists are standing by to visit company facilities, in order to provide consultation, train relevant staff, and work together to implement the promising new technology.

The professional community is already expressing interest in FruitMag. Prof Samir Droby from the Volcani Institute will present a comprehensive report on FruitMag, which will include tests, quality parameters and application specifications. His presentation will take place at the Fruit Logistica Future Hub, on February 8th, at 11:00.
