Hazelnuts and other nuts rank ninth in Georgia’s total exports with a share of 1.8%. However, their exports decreased in 2022. According to the official data, Georgia received $89.8 million of income from the sale of nuts in the first 11 months of 2022, which is 15.6% less than in the same period in 2021.
According to Business Georgia, a total of 21 456 tonnes of nuts were exported during the period.
The main export market for hazelnuts and other nuts is the EU countries accounting for 72.2% of nut exports. The TOP-10 countries buying nuts from Georgia are:
- Italy – $25.2 million, 6 934 tonnes;
- Germany – $20.4 million, 4 147 tonnes;
- Armenia – $8 million, 2 065 tonnes;
- Spain – $4.7 million, 921 tonnes;
- Russia — $3.3 million, 824 tonnes;
- Lithuania – $3.2 million, 621 tonnes;
- France – $3.1 million, 580 tonnes;
- Poland – $2.7 million, 559 tonnes;
- Czech Republic – $2.5 million, 524 tonnes;
- Saudi Arabia – $2.1 million, 375 tonnes.
Georgia also imports nuts – the country purchased 3 995 tonnes of various nuts worth $12.1 million in January-November 2022, which is 3.4% more than in the same period last year.
It is noted that nuts were mainly imported from the United States. The TOP-5 countries where Georgia imports nuts are:
- USA – $3.8 million, 1 496 tonnes;
- Turkey – $2.1 million, 725 tonnes;
- Ukraine – $1.6 million, 507 tonnes;
- Kyrgyzstan – $811 000, 270 tonnes;
- Uzbekistan – $659 000, 227 tonnes.
