Spring onion season going well in Egypt

“We expected demand to be lower with everything going on in the world”

Mai Yassin, export manager at Egyptian fresh produce exporter Stars of Export, states that this stage of the spring onion season is a challenging one: “The season for spring onions in Egypt is quite okay, production was relatively good. Naturally, the winter season always has specific challenges, as the weather can destroy a percentage of the crop in no time, without much warning. However, the overall demand for spring onions is stable at the moment, so that’s a positive for us.”

Despite costs going up for all consumers, demand for spring onions is still at a good level. “Our spring onions are mostly sent to the European market, with an emphasis on the United Kingdom. We expected demand to be lower with everything going on in the world, and the increasing prices for all consumer goods. However, it’s been very decent and most importantly the situation seems to be stable. The season is good enough for us as Stars of Export and we hope we can head towards the end of the season at the same level, or even do better as the season finishes,” Yassin concludes.
