European market has good demand for okra from India

As winter is upon the European continent, demand for okra seems to be increasing, says Manoj Barai, general manager for Indian fresh produce exporter MK Exports: “Our okra season has been good so far. The demand for Indian okra has started to increase, as the winter season starts in European markets. Current demand is already at a good level and it’s expected to go up in the coming months. The European market has been very good at the moment and I expect the trade to this market to improve even further. Additional to markets we already cater we are looking for new markets to explore our fresh products.”

Despite there being lower volumes available this season, the prices aren’t increasing. In fact, okra prices are lower than they were last year. “The volumes are lower compared to previous season at the moment. The prices though, are much cheaper this year compared to the last two years. Still, there seems to be a slowdown globally, as demand is also on the lower side compared to those days. The logistical situation has been positive towards the end of this year, as air freight rates are going down, but the additional GST on exports via air freight has made the situation a bit more difficult. However, we are up to the task and are effectively managing it,” Barai concludes.
