The share of land that Spain devoted to organic crops was 58 times higher than in Morocco

According to the most recent FAO ecological area data, in 2020 Spain had a total of 16.65 million hectares of crops, 1.16 million of which (i.e. 7% of the total) were devoted to organic production.

That year Morocco had a cultivable area of 9.38 million hectares and devoted only 11,450 hectares to organic production, i.e. 0.12% of the total. The Netherlands had 1.04 million hectares, 30,067 hectares of which were destined for organic production (2.89% of the total). This means that the share of arable land that was devoted to organic cultivation in Spain was 58.3 times higher than in Morocco and 2.42 times higher than in the Netherlands.

In 2020, France had a total cultivation area of 18.97 million hectares, 1.64 million hectares of which were devoted to organic crops, which accounts for 8.63% of the total area. France was the only country that surpassed Spain in the number of hectares devoted to organic production.

According to FAO, in 2020, Italy had 9.26 million hectares of crops, 16.32% of which, i.e. 1.51 million hectares, were destined for organic crops.

Austria had a total cultivation area of 1.39 million hectares, 287,100 hectares of which (20.69% of the total) were destined for organic production.
