Agri Funghi (Basilicata) production manager Filippo Lupo reports how, up until a few weeks ago, they were worried inflation and the general uncertainty and propensity to save would lead to a drop in sales of the substrates destined to king oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii) cultivation. However this does not seem to be the case.
Booked blocks that will be planed over the next few months.
"I was very pleased with how the market performed in November and early December. I thought sales would drop but, despite the difficult economic period, orders are 10% higher than 2021. We have run out of substrate blocks in our warehouse and they were sold to some big retail chains, dealers of agricultural products, wholesale markets and, of course, producers."

"I am happy about this trend, which is making us hopeful for the first few months of 2023. The general price increases, including those of substrate blocks, did not slow down sales. We all know mushrooms are not commodities, so we were not sure about the orders. Over the past few weeks, we actually could not meet demand. Had we imagined it, we would increased incubation volumes."

"In the months of November/December, which gather a good 30-35% of the annual sales of fresh produce, demand for substrates is generally high. However this year it seems higher than usual, so much so that we have ran out of blocks sooner than expected."
