The Netherlands issues high cadmium alert on Moroccan peppers

According to the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), the Dutch authorities detected that a batch of peppers from Morocco had a high level of cadmium. The peppers contained cadmium in a proportion of 0.022 mg/kg – ppm.

In addition to the Netherlands markets, the peppers were destined for Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

The Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain (CONTAM) of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) adopted an opinion on cadmium in food, in which it assessed the risk of exposure of the European population due to food consumption and set the tolerable weekly intake at 2.5 μg/kg b.w.
