Specialists such as Matteo Freddi from "Freddi prodotti ortofrutticoli" in Sant'Ilario d'Enza (Reggio Emilia) are optimistic about next week as the sales of onions, especially shallot and Borettana onions, should increase as we are approaching Christmas.
Matteo Freddi
"We certainly are not expecting prices to change, also because we have long-term programs as usual, but we are expecting volumes to increase. The past few weeks have been rather 'weak' when it comes to quantities, so we are hoping they will increase."
Freddi confirms that volumes on the Italian market are rather low, lower than 2021, while sales are constant abroad. "We export white onions to the Netherlands and Great Britain, and sales are stable over there."
It is always risky to talk about prices, because they depend on many variables. Anyway Freddi reports that, over the past few days, shallot has been hovering between €2 and €2.50/kg depending on the packet. Borettana onions reach as much as €3.50/kg.
However, when it comes to Borettana onions, it seems the produce is not lasting well due to the high temperatures in the summer. "This means we need to eliminate waste while processing. What is more, storage affects this product a lot, so we need to spend more on electricity."
