Daniel Badger - VitaFresh Produce

“The fig is traditionally popular at Christmas, but sales have stabilised through the year"

New season Brazilian figs have arrived at VitaFresh Produce, the season runs from November until August.

“The season started slowly with short supply and high prices,” explains Daniel Badger, Managing Director at VitaFresh Produce. “But we are now getting good volumes in.”

VitaFresh have contracted growers in Brazil and sell the figs under the Figos do Vale brand.

“The fig is traditionally popular at Christmas for figgy pudding and to compliment cheese boards, but the trend has been changing and sales have stabilised through the year. The exotics trade as whole is changing, this year sales are feeling the cost-of-living pinch, also the restaurant and catering trades have never recovered from the pandemic and are still suffering from staff shortages, many pubs and restaurants are only able to open for three or four days a week due to lack of staff, this of course has a fall back on the trade.

“At this time of year we do see an increase in demand for strawberries and raspberries and of course limes for those Christmas party cocktails, but it is becoming harder to predict, last year’s sales don’t necessarily relate to what will sell this year.”
