French watchdog orders Amazon to pay $3.5mln in penalties
A French watchdog has ordered U.S. e-commerce giant Amazon.com to pay 3.3mln euros ($3.5mln) in penalties for failing to modify contractual provisions related to third-party sellers by the deadline it set, the watchdog said. France's DGCCRF consumer fraud watchdog said in a statement Amazon had been ordered to make the changes, aimed at correcting imbalances in contractual terms between Amazon's online marketplace and third-party sellers, by March 22.

Food retailer Sligro acquires Metro activities in Belgium
Dutch food retailer Sligro Food Group said it would buy a chunk of German distribution company Metro's activities in Belgium. Sligro, which will take over nine Metro wholesalers across the country and about a hundred employees from the regional network and head office, will pay 47mln euros ($49.31mln) for the outlets.

US: UNFI posts Q1 sales gains, but profits decline 13.2%
United Natural Foods Inc. said inflation and new wholesale customers helped drive dollar sales gains in the first quarter, even though unit sales declined, and profits were squeezed. Sales were up 7.6% for the period, which ended October 29, compared with the year-ago first quarter. Net income, however, fell 13.2%, to $66mln, as the company’s gross profit rate declined to 14.6% of sales, including a $21mln inventory charge, compared with 14.9% a year ago.

US: Walmart sees automation as the future
Walmart sees investments in automation as one of the key factors driving its profitability in the years ahead, Doug McMillon, president and CEO of the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer, said at an investor presentation. Speaking at the 2022 Morgan Stanley Global Consumer & Retail Conference, McMillon said that robotic warehouses, in which goods are moved by unmanned wheeled carts, will not only reduce the need for workers in the warehouses themselves, but also in the stores where the goods are received.
