Dominik Kitschke, Group Market Supervision Manager at Nuremberg Wholesale Market

Steady growth despite adverse conditions

"Every year, around 200,000 tons of goods are handled at the Nuremberg wholesale market, which are delivered within a radius of 100-200 km," says Group Market Supervision Manager Dominik Kitschke. "We also have customers from Munich to some extent. Word seems to be getting around about our quality goods and, above all, our diverse range. Furthermore, we are very well connected geographically, which is why it's quite easy to get to us."

"The market is more competitive, while imports have remained at a relatively stable level. What can be seen, however, is that more is being delivered. The typical walk-in customers are becoming fewer and fewer," Kitschke said. Nonetheless, he said, the quality of the products remains good, which is why customers continue to place their trust in suppliers and why this is reflected in sales. "Over the past two years, two or three new businesses have set up store here. Otherwise, the number of businesses remains unchanged," Kitschke states.

"Among other things, there is a lack of personnel in truck transport and picking, and generally there is a shortage of skilled workers everywhere. The working hours also deter some; after all, most start work between 00:00 and 02:00 AM. It is not easy to find new, quality personnel. However, after all, that's true for many other sectors of the economy." He also noted that former catering clients have gone out of business due in part to the lack of staff. "Fortunately, our wholesale market operations have not had any businesses go out of business because of this."

He added that the wholesale market has seen steady growth despite the adverse conditions. "But of course, that's also thanks to our location in Knoblauchsland, which means many growers who are right there. We have weathered the crises of recent years almost without a hitch," says Kitschke. The slump in sales at the beginning of the pandemic was followed quite soon by a rapid increase in business.
