Neiker transfers its Edurne and Beltza potatoes to Udapa

"Launching these two new references on the market is a very important milestone for our cooperative"

The technological center Neiker, a member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), and the Alava cooperative Udapa have signed a transfer agreement until 2032, through which the cooperative will be able to plant, produce seed potatoes and potatoes for consumption, and market the new Beltza and Edurne potato varieties, obtained by Neiker.

"This collaboration is of great value. The alliances between technological centers and the agri-food sector allow us to find solutions to challenges and take advantage of new opportunities that may come in the future," stated Leire Barañano, the director of Neiker, during the signing of the agreement.

The transfer of knowledge and solutions to the agricultural sector is an essential part of Neiker's philosophy. These alliances between the technology center and agri-food companies allow Neiker to develop innovative solutions to meet the challenges of the sector so that farmers can obtain better harvests while taking care of the environment and ensuring food production.

Marketing campaign
“Unlike most of the most common potatoes in our markets, Beltza is characterized by its intense purple color and by having a high content of antioxidants that are beneficial to health. In addition, it adapts very well to the climatic conditions of the Alava territory, which helps producers obtain a high and stable production. This new variety has Andean parents, which gives it its purple color, and local ancestry, which contributes to its good production performance."

“In turn, the Edurne variety has achieved very high ratings in the tastings carried out to assess its acceptance by the end customer. It is a variety that is characterized by having light yellow flesh and very thin skin that is easy to wash and peel. In addition, it's good for frying and cooking, which makes it suitable for domestic consumption."

As Christmas approaches, Udapa plans to market these two new varieties via its main large distribution customers under the slogan 'Potatoes with an origin' (Patatas con origen- in Spanish).

"Launching these two new references to the market is a very important milestone for our cooperative, as it highlights the great work we are doing to boost potato production in the territory," stated Alfonso Saenz de Camara, Udapa's general manager. "To make them more attractive to all consumers, these potatoes are presented in plastic-free containers and with a modern image that aims to represent the main values of the cooperative," he added.
