"Drought resulted in 40% less yield of Moldovan apples overall"

According to the customs service of Moldova, about 7 000 tonnes of apples were exported from the country in November 2022. This is the lowest volume of November exports over the past five years. In 2020 the export volume was almost 8 000 tonnes. Exports in November 2021 were a record – 22 500 tonnes.

Iurie Fala, executive director of Moldova Fruct, stated that the lower export volumes can be explained: "We've experienced a drought, which resulted in 40% less yield of apples overall. Normally we would have 665,000 tons of apples, and this year there has been only 405,000 tons. So the lower export numbers will reflect this in the rest of the season," he said.

The main direction of supplies of Moldovan apples in November of this year is the CIS countries reports east-fruit.com However, representatives of farmers’ organizations believe that the situation in alternative markets is also not bad: shipments of almost 1 000 tonnes of apples to the markets of the Persian Gulf countries, and, most importantly, more than 600 tonnes to Romania. This is a good result for Moldovan exporters in November when there are still local apples on the Romanian market and more diverse high-quality apples from neighboring European countries.
