According to a report prepared by Eric Imbert, of the Center for International Cooperation in Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD), the area devoted to avocado production in the world in the 2020/21 campaign increased by 6.7% over the previous campaign totaling 415,000 hectares.

Latin America is the region with the largest area devoted to this fruit in the 2020/2021 campaign, with 312,000 hectares (75% of the total), followed by the Mediterranean region with 38,000 hectares (9%), Africa with 28,000 hectares (7%), California with 19,000 hectares (5%), and Oceania with 18,000 (4%).

CIRAD highlighted in its analysis the rapid growth of the avocado area in the last decade. Since the 2009/2010 marketing year, the avocado production area has increased by 77.35%.

Between the 2008/2009 and 2014/2015 marketing years, the area increased by 10,000 hectares per year; and during the 2015/2016 and 2020/2021 marketing years, it increased by 21,600 hectares per year. In total, in the last 6 campaigns (from 2015/2016 to 2020/2021) the area has increased by more than 130,000 hectares.

In the last 6 years, Peru has accounted for nearly 33% of the global growth
According to the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass), the country went from having 33,064 hectares in 2018 to 60,091 hectares in 2022, that is, 27,027 new hectares were installed in 4 years, which means it had an average increase of 6,757 hectares a year during this period.

In this regard, the president of ProHass, Juan Carlos Paredes, said the area devoted to Hass avocado in the world increased by approximately 21,000 hectares per year in the last 6 years, which means Peru accounted for nearly 33% of the global growth.

Hass avocado world trade growth
The volume of fruit marketed internationally has increased as the avocado area increased. CIRAD noted that between the 2005/2006 campaign and the 2011/2012 campaign, global Hass avocado production increased from 500,000 to 900,000 tons.

CIRAD also highlighted that from the 2011/2012 campaign to the 2020/2021 campaign, world production increased from 900,000 to 2.5 million tons, increasing by 2.5 times, experiencing an annual growth rate of 12% while the growth of other fruits in the same period stood at 2.1% per year.
