India's Hubballi market sees 50% drop in onion arrivals

The local supply of onions to India's Hubballi APMC market in Karnataka has dropped by 50%. This is due to producers who are hit by the heavy rain being unable to supply due to lower production.

High quality onion prices is starting to rise as lower quality onions are in short supply. The product is a major ingredient in food in the country. The market is seeing higher prices for the so called 'Puna' variety from a neighbouring state, selling for more than Rs 40 ($0.48) per kg.

According to the local horticulture department there was crop loss on more than 4 800 hectares of onions out of 20 000 hectares due to the heavy rain and high disease burden it caused.
