“In Australia we are used to having exceptionally high quality fruit"

Sai World’s growers in New South Wales picked the first of this season’s cherries this week, they are being packed ready to be sent to India, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Australia has had an unprecedented amount of rain this year and this will affect the quality of the cherries, but according to Sam Vasala from Sai World this does not mean that the quality will be bad.

“In Australia we are used to having exceptionally high quality fruit, whether it is cherries, citrus, stone fruit or any other fruit. This season we will just have to be careful and put the fruit into the right markets and customers need to understand the situation.”

Sam is now hoping for good sunshine for the cherry and stone fruit harvests. New South Wales’ cherry harvest will run until December, then cherries will come from South Australia into January before Tasmania comes on the market.

Chinese New Year falls early this year which is good for the Australian mainland growers, CNY dictates prices in the Asian markets and Sam thinks that prices will be high this year as Chile has had some rain and hail which may affect their supply of cherries and stone fruit.

“The earlier Chinese New Year is a good thing as we have some great early cherry varieties which have great flavour, our early stone is also very good. I think people worry too much about Chinese New Year, it is only week and when it is done sales start to pick up again and we will have some our best stone fruit on offer.”
