"Thanks to good growing conditions, volume of grapefruit from Yunnan is stable"

The domestically produced grapefruit was launched in October, taking over from the South African imported grapefruit which is at the end of its production season. There are many grapefruit production areas in China but Yunnan is the most conducive to the growth of various fruits due to its rich light resources and climate advantages.

"The characteristic of Yunnan grapefruit is that the flesh is a brighter red and the flavor is stronger, but the skin is relatively thick. Due to the climate in Yunnan, the skin is thicker and it is slightly less smooth. However, it does not affect its taste." Mr. Dong Honglei of Yunnan Shiling Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. told FreshPlaza.

"Thanks to Yunnan's superior geographical and climatic conditions, the large-scale extreme weather across the country has not had a great impact on grapefruit production areas in Yunnan this year. The appearance and taste of grapefruit are better than last year. Our own grapefruit orchard is in the second year of fruiting, and the output jumped from more than 40 tons last year to more than 300 tons this year. At present, the prices for grapefruit in the market are relatively uneven. For example, the price in tea shops is about 8 yuan/kg, but the price of premium gift boxes is higher. In terms of sales, due to the weak market consumption this year, buyers are currently purchasing less and their orders are scattered."

Talking about the application fields of local grapefruit, Mr. Dong said: "Grapefruit is rich in vitamins and folic acid. But because the taste is sweet and sour and slightly bitter, they sell slower and perform less well in fresh food retail as Chinese people like to eat sweet fruits.

"Grapefruit is often regarded as a 'functional fruit' and it is often used as an auxiliary material, processed into flower tea and canned fruit, etc. Our grapefruit products are more used in the processing of flower fruit tea, and slices, or provided to tea shops to make juice, etc. As the supply for tea shops is becoming saturated, I am more optimistic about the prospect of canned grapefruit. In my opinion, canned grapefruit can truly restore the state of grapefruit itself and guarantee real fruit pulp. With a long storage period and wider application, it can be used not only in tea shops but also as an auxiliary material for restaurants or home cooking. We are looking for partners in canned fruit."

Yunnan Shiling Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. focuses on fruit planting. It has built a supply chain system and has its own standardized sorting factory. Its main products include citrus, lemon, grapefruit, kiwi, rock sugar orange, and so on.
