Peruvian garlic exports increase as a result of the logistical restrictions on Chinese shipments

Peru, which in 2021 was the world's tenth largest exporter of garlic, exported a total of 9,747 tons of garlic, worth 13 million dollars, in the first ten months of this year; i.e 46% more volume and 23% more in value than in the same period of 2021. "This increase comes after a sharp drop, and it's explained by the increase in demand in the North American market and by the logistical restrictions of Chinese shipments, the main global supplier," stated Fresh Fruit.

"The volume and value of exports increased during the first months of 2022. This trend is expected to continue until the end of the year. China is still very limited because of the logistical problems in the world. However, China's massive production and low prices continue to make it a threat, especially in North America. Currently, there is uncertainty regarding Spain's garlic production because the regions of Andalusia and Castile have been affected by an inclement drought and producers aren't sure if they'll have water available. This uncertainty seems to be an important factor that favors Peruvian shipments at the end of this year and the beginning of 2023."

According to Fresh Fruit, the main destinations for Peru's garlic in the period analyzed were Mexico (39% share), the United States (25%), and Ecuador (24%).

Exports to Mexico totaled 2,987 tons (+9%) worth 5 million dollars (+3%). In this market, the average price stood at 1.69 dollars per kilogram (-5%).

Shipments to the United States totaled 1,309 tons (+26%) and were worth 3 million dollars (+47%). The North American market paid 2.46 dollars per kilogram (+17%) of the Peruvian product.

Shipments to Ecuador amounted to 3,993 tons (+91%) worth 3 million dollars (+41%). Ecuador paid 0.77 dollars per kilogram for Peruvian garlic (i.e. -26% less than in the same period of the previous year).
