Frequent extreme weather causes Yantai Fuji apple production to drop by about 30%

This year's new season of Yantai Fuji apples began harvesting after Shuangjiang (end of Oct), and it is expected that the supply period will end in several days. Despite the frequent occurrence of extreme weather, such as rain in the early stages, this did not lead to a delay in the start of the Yantai Fuji production season. Recently, Mr. Lu Lin from Yantai Xitian Farm Co., Ltd. spoke to FreshPlaza about the progress of the production season.

"Although the production season is proceeding as scheduled, the extreme weather still has a great impact on the production, and the number of commercial fruits has been significantly reduced. In general, the production reduction ratio is about 30%. In fact, in Yantai, one of the main apple-producing areas in China, the planting area has been gradually decreasing in recent years. The reason is that traditional agriculture still takes the family as the producing unit and the middle-aged and the elderly as the main management force. With the advancement of urbanization, young people have moved to big cities to settle down, while middle-aged and elderly people are slowly aging, which eventually leads to more and more orchards being left unused," Mr. Lu said.

Under its own brand "Xitian", the supply of Yantai Xitian Farm mainly focuses on large fruit, basically above 85#. Mr. Lu said, "In terms of channels, our sales are mainly based on the purchases of high-end hotel companies, supplemented by e-commerce. Generally speaking, ordinary e-commerce prefers smaller fruits which is between 75# and 85#. "
