ASOEX Table Grapes Committee realesed its second estimate for the season

Chilean fresh grape exports are expected to decrease by 7.7% this season

The ASOEX Table Grape Committee has released its second estimate for the 2022-2023 fresh grape export season. According to this second estimate, the country will export 68.6 million boxes of fresh grapes (8.2 kg each), i.e. 7.7% less than in the 2021-2022 financial year.

"The new forecast is 2.8% lower than the first forecast but it shows an increase in exports of new varieties, not only over the previous forecast but also in relation to the shipments of traditional varieties and Red Globe grapes. This is a reflection of the varietal turnover that is taking place in the industry and it explains, in part, the decrease in total shipments," stressed Ivan Marambio, the president of ASOEX.

According to the forecast, Chile will export 36,743,977 boxes of new varieties, 20,372,471 boxes of traditional varieties, and 11,490,306 boxes of the Red Globe variety. Compared to the first forecast, exports of the Red Globe variety decreased by more than 850,000 boxes, and exports of traditional varieties fell by more than 1.8 million boxes.

The export of white varieties also increased over the first forecast and now stands at 24,008,975 boxes. The remaining varieties are expected to decrease compared to the previous forecast. According to this second forecast, Chile will export 26,634,236 boxes of red grapes, 6,473,237 boxes of black grapes, and 11,490,306 boxes of Red Globe grapes.

The most outstanding new white varieties are the Thompson Seedless and Sugraone grapes. The Crimson Seedless, Flame Seedless, and Perlon varieties stand out among the new red varieties: and the Autumn Royal and Black Seedless varieties among the new black grapes.

Markets
"We'll experience a decrease in shipments to all our destination markets compared to the previous season. We expect shipments to the United States will decrease by 1%, exports to Asia by 9%, and exports to Europe by 27%," stated Ignacio Caballero, the coordinator of the ASOEX Table Grape Committee.

The United States will continue to be the main destination as Chile will export 38.62 million boxes of table grapes to this market. It will be followed by Asia with 14.80 million boxes and Europe with 9.12 million boxes. The remaining 6.07 million boxes will be distributed among the other markets, he stated.
