Increase in the self-production of mushrooms

The international economic crisis and the higher cost of living have modified the habits of consumers, who have changed their lifestyles as well as their purchasing choices.

This change often results in consumers self-producing certain products. This is what is happening with mushrooms, as reported by Filippo Lupo from Agri Funghi, a company from Basilicata specializing in the production of substrates and in the cultivation of Cardoncelli mushrooms.

"Our traders report that consumption behaviors are changing, as people tend to produce their own mushrooms more. More and more families are opting to use substrates to grow mushrooms at home and save money."

"This year, characterized by uncertainty and by a higher propensity towards saving, requests of substrate blocks have dropped by 20% compared to one year ago. However, what we lost there, we made up thanks to the growth in self-production, meaning we have not registered a drop in orders and our figures are similar to those before the pandemic."

Agri Funghi also commercializes fresh produce. "We are very pleased from this point of view as well, as there is a lot of demand from big retail chains and markets, while availability is limited. Harvesting started in early September in natural greenhouses located at 900 m asl and will continue until summer. The wholesale price is €6.50/kg (approximately one Euro more than 2021). The high temperatures of the past few days have not been pushing consumption, but we think demand and quotations will increase as of early November."
