High demand and limited supply lead to price increases in Ukrainian onion market

New price increases are a feature on the Ukrainian onion market. High demand from wholesalers and limited offer from growers are the main factors contributing to further price growth in the segment. Growers have gradually raised their prices; today, onions are sold at 25-29 UAH/kg ($0.68-0.79/kg), which is on average 13% more expensive than at the end of the last week.

The main reason for the rise in onion prices is the suspended harvesting in many farms due to rainy weather, which has significantly reduced the supply of onions on the market. Analysts also report that growers prefer to store most of the good-quality onions, selling them only in small batches.

Onions on the Ukrainian market are currently on average 4.3 times more expensive YoY. At the same time, many market players believe that the positive price trend will continue, since many growers not owning storage facilities have managed to sell a large part of onion stocks. The rest of the growers prefer to store onions and refrain from selling in anticipation of further price rises.
