Inflation September 2022:

Peru: Potatoes saw largest price increase

The price of potatoes grew more than 22% in September and led the list of products with the highest incidence in the basic basket and that became more expensive in the last month in Metropolitan Lima and at the national level, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics ( INEI).

In the capital, the yellow potato became more expensive 22.8% in the ninth month of 2022. It is followed by the huayro potato, which rose 16.8%, the white potato (15.3%) and the colored potato (10.0%).

Something similar was registered in the prices at the national level, in which the yellow potato advanced 22.5% in 23 cities, white 15.3% (23 cities), huayro 14.7% (12 cities) and color 5.4 % (8 cities).

Price variation in September
According to Fidencio Oscanoa, former director of the Committee of Potato Seed Producers of Huasahuasi (Tarma), the cost of the tuber is related to the increase in production costs of this crop, which in the last two years went from around S / 25,000 to about S/ 35,000 per hectare.

The rise in the price of potatoes in recent months has allowed farmers to recover the losses recorded in previous years. “We used to subsidize the food of large populations. Two years ago our production cost was from S/ 0.75 to S/ 0.80 per kilo, but we sold potatoes for S/ 0.20 per kilo. We subsidized S / 0.50 for food,” he comments.
